On June 20 a big purple blob formed in the pacific, and the WSL Big Wave Commission placed the Puerto Escondido event on green alert. Dakine team riders Albee Layer, Billy Kemper, Koa Rothman, and Damien Hobgood all packed up their big boards and made the journey down south. We decided to follow the boys down and document the behind the scenes, as well as capture some amazing and horrific action. The waves were XXL in every way and all the athletes involved gave it everything they could. Everyone got insanely pounded, but some got rides they will never forget. The event was amazing and congratulations to Grant “Twiggy” Baker for putting on a barrel clinic and taking the event.
After the event, Albee Layer and Kain Daly decided to downshift and go hunt some perfect empty right points for a few days. Unfortunately the state of Oaxaca was on a teachers strike. As a retaliation from one political party to the other, they shut down almost all of the gasoline in the state. The citizens on Oaxaca were forced to wait in line for up to 8 hours just to fill up their vehicles. On top of that, road blocks were placed in Salina Cruz, and they wouldn’t allow locals to pass. There was a ton of tension and it was a little sketchy to say the least. Despite all the political unrest, we charged it anyway. We hired an excellent guide and he took us to spot he only has access too. We scored! The conditions were on fire and the boys went ham every time they paddled out. Not another surfer as far as the eye could see.
